DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
Magnus and I have been making movies since fourth grade, when we ran around our neighborhood with an iPod Nano filming our own adaptation of Judy Blume's "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing." Since then, we've continued to document our experiences with growing up and coming-of-age through our work. Where Were You? marks our tenth collaboration since that infamous "film" we made together in elementary school.
With this movie, we wanted to explore the end of childhood, and how people who were best friends as kids can suddenly be torn apart from each other based on circumstances completely out of their control. We thought it was important that we played the two main characters, so that we could bring our own experiences into these roles, and our dynamic of having been friends and collaborators for nearly ten years. Since we filmed this movie in the summer before we both headed off to college, telling this story was an incredibly emotional process for both of us.
As we started to develop the world of this story, we decided it would be perfect to set our personal story amidst the chaos of a murder mystery thriller, calling upon our favorite whodunnit films as influences for this film's tone.
We made the movie on a shoestring budget of just under $2000 USD, running around San Diego with our friends trying to film scenes and connect the dots of our story. Much of the dialogue in the film was improvised, and we were so lucky that we had such incredible performers in the movie that took that challenge with stride, and allowed the crazy, hectic environment of our set to inform their performances.
We hope that you enjoy the film!
